The Community Grant Scheme gives small grants to local community and voluntary groups that work to make a real difference within our communities.

We want to support projects that benefit those most in need and applications open again on Friday, 1 November 2024! We spoke to Friends of Friarwood Valley Gardens who received a community grant last year.

Formed in 2012, Friends of Friarwood Valley Gardens is a voluntary community group that aims to improve and maintain the Valley Gardens in Pontefract for the local community.

The group is proud of installing a popular children’s playground in 2015. The group wanted to extend the park by adding more play equipment that would be suitable for older children and thought it would be a great way to bring more people to the Valley Gardens. This is when they applied for the WDH Community Grant.

The group was awarded £1,750 which was put towards installing more play equipment and extending the park.

Since installing the new equipment over the summer, it has been popular! More families have visited Valley Gardens this year and taken advantage of the new extended park.

There are more exciting plans for the future of the park. The group is now focused on replacing older parts of the equipment and adding more playground items in the section for younger children.

Colin White, Chair of Friends of Friarwood Valley, said: “We have benefited from the WDH Community Grant a few times over the years and it really helps us achieve our goals. The work on the park makes a big difference to the community with a new space to enjoy. We love seeing families enjoying the park and spending time together at Valley Gardens. We can’t wait to get started on the next phase of park improvements – watch this space!”
