We joined representatives from the armed forces and the local community in a remembrance service in Pontefract to honour those who have made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.
The service was organised around the memorial feature installed at the entrance to The Barracks estate by WDH in 2018. The memorial is dedicated to the service men and women who were stationed or lived at The Barracks and was unveiled to mark 100 years since the end of World War One.
Service Director for Housing and Health, Chris Gent, laid a wreath on behalf of WDH at the memorial service alongside a representative from The Barracks Community Association.
Chris said: “It was an honour to represent WDH at the Barracks community remembrance service this morning. It was great to see all members of the community come together to reflect and give thanks to everyone who has made sacrifices in service of the country.”
They went with songs to the battle, they were young,
Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow.
They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted;
They fell with their faces to the foe.
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
