Community Grant supports Wakefield pantry to help more families

Eastmoor Community Centre provides a range of services to the local community as well as many social activities. This includes hosting services such as Citizens Advice, Leeds credit Union, Turning Point, Step Up and Turning Minds Around. On average, the Community Pantry supports 35 to 40 families a week through pantry memberships and emergency food parcels.

To help more families and prevent food wastage, the group really needed another freezer to store fresh produce. This is when they applied for the WDH Community Grant. The Community Grant Scheme gives small grants to local community and voluntary groups that work to make a real difference within our communities.

After their application was successful, the group received £550 which covered the cost of the chest freezer in full!

Lisa Milsom, Community Pantry and Office Administrator for Eastmoor Community Group, said, “We are fortunate to receive fresh goods weekly and frozen goods fortnightly as well as a weekly donation of bread from Warburtons. The chest freezer means we can freeze excess bread and fresh items. It has made a world of difference!

“We are now planning our Autumn raffle and Christmas fair to be able to provide extra seasonal food at Christmas and into the New Year. The freezer will be a big help for storage.

“If your group is thinking about applying for a Community Grant, I say go for it! It is a very easy process and extremely worthwhile.”
