Major refurbishment starts at Stoneygarth independent living scheme

Published 19 May 2021

Work has started on a major refurbishment of WDH’s independent living scheme at Stoneygarth in Wakefield.

The project, carried out by WDH’s own construction team and local contractors, will see the building being fully refurbished and the surrounding grounds fully landscaped with additional parking provided. The building will also be fitted with solar panels to increase energy efficiency and will have brand new communal spaces including the addition of a hair salon, scooter room and spa room for residents to enjoy. Each of the apartments will be completely refitted with new wet rooms and kitchens, making them easily accessible for all residents.

As part of it’s commitment to creating better places to live, WDH has spent millions of pounds refurbishing 16 of its existing 34 independent living schemes with Stoneygarth being the 17th scheme to be improved, which provide safe, comfortable homes for over 1,000 elderly and vulnerable residents across the Wakefield district.

The works at Stoneygarth are on track to be completed by the end of 2021, with previous residents who were relocated for the duration of the refurbishment, moving back to their new scheme soon after. Any available properties in the scheme will be promoted for rent through Homesearch

Mick Walsh, WDH’s Executive Director of Housing, said: “As a business we have continued to invest in our independent living schemes across the district, ensuring that we create the best and safest possible places for older and vulnerable people to live. In our schemes they are part of a community and can receive support to remain independent at home for as long as possible.”

For anyone who has a  relatives they think would benefit from moving into Stoneygarth or any of our independent living schemes, please visit http://bit.ly/IndependentLivingatWDH for more information.
