Your safety is our priority

Whilst the world is very much focused on coronavirus, as we all are, I’d like to take the opportunity to highlight the importance of safety.

The safety and wellbeing of our tenants is our top priority. As we are all now spending much more time at home, I would like to highlight some of the additional health and safety challenges we face and how best to prevent them.

Since lockdown was introduced last month we have seen an increased number of garden fires. We understand that with the temporary suspension of garden waste collection services households are finding that they have more garden waste than usual. However, in the interest of safety, we must insist that you do not burn any waste on your premises. Fires, including garden fires, can quickly burn out of control putting you and your family in danger. Whilst I am sure all fires are started with the belief that we can keep them under control, we have had a number that have caused damage to properties, tenants belongings and have endangered life. Please stay safe and bag up any garden or household waste until it can be collected. Help us to keep our communities safe and healthy places to live by not burning, fly-tipping or dumping waste or rubbish.

As is always the case in times of national crisis, there are criminals who will seek to take advantage of people when they are most vulnerable. We have been working closely with other agencies and have been notified of a number of scams, ranging from cold callers to malicious mobile apps and text scams. Please do stay on your guard and be aware that these things are going on, however insensitive it may seem. Citizens Advice has put together some information to help you if you think something may be a scam (click here) and we are also posting advice to our Facebook page to help you to spot a scam with advice on what to do next. If you are ever contacted by someone claiming to be from WDH and you are in doubt, please call OneCALL on 0345 8 507 507 immediately for advice.

We will always do everything we can to keep you and our employees safe. This is why we follow strict Government guidelines with regards to the safety of your home, including the safety of your gas boiler and electrics. Whilst I understand some of you may be apprehensive about allowing someone in to your home at this time, we will only enter where it is safe to do so, observing strict social distancing measures and wearing the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) where necessary. We are currently only making a  request to come in where it is in the interest of your safety. However, if you are self- isolating or shielding,  please tell us. We will not enter your home and will always arrange a time when your isolation or shielding period is over.
