The Wakefield Community Choir delivers prize winning performance

Published 23 November 2021

The Wakefield Community Choir were our winners of the Digital in the Community Award at our 10th Love Where You Live Awards held at Pontefract Racecourse on Friday, 12 November 2021.

The Community Choir Wakefield, is an inclusive, non-auditioned community choir for the district which has adopted digital technology such as Skype and Zoom to rehearse and perform online during the pandemic. The choir has been a great way for people to get together and perform but it also brings pleasure to the people that watch the performances. One of their performances was even aired on the big screen in The Ridings, shopping Centre in Wakefield for all to enjoy.

Tom Long, Chair of The Community Choir, said: “To say we were surprised to win is a massive understatement but thank you to all who voted for us. The average age of the choir is 76 but they love to make videos to help to cheer up the “old folk” particularly in care homes. The money will go towards producing our Christmas video, which will then be distributed to older people to help alleviate loneliness and social isolation. We also wanted to say a big thank you to WDH for hosting a fantastic event and to the caterers for a really good meal.”
