Normanton estate gets mini makeover

Published 3 July 2014

Students from a school in Normanton came together last week to help improve communal land on Church Court.

32 pupils at Newlands Primary School took part in the event, which was organised as part of WDH’s Love Where You Live project following a consultation with local residents about how the area could be improved. The youngsters carried out a litter pick, helped clear weeds, replant shrubs and bed a range of new plants.

Claire Secker, WDH’s Tenant Involvement Officer, said:  “Everyone who took part has done a fantastic job - they’ve all really helped transform the area. Looking forward to the winter period, we’ll try and get the pupils out again to do some more planting to maintain the project.”

Local resident, Ann Davison, 77, said: “The pupils have been fantastic, and what they’ve done looks really lovely. It’s been nice to see the progress they’ve made.”

WDH’s Love Where You Live project supports communities to improve areas by tidying them up and making them greener. To suggest a project idea, call: 01977 788647 or email tenants@wdh.co.uk

The Great Wakefield Spring Clean

Published 27 March 2017

WDH has been working with local schools and partners, including Wakefield Council, to support the Great British Spring Clean.

During the week long campaign, WDH has helped schools across the district to clean up their local area, collecting 132 bags of rubbish.

As well as litter, the housing association also disposed of larger items like wardrobes, bike’s, scooter’s, headboards and mattresses which had been dumped

Tom Lawton, WDH’s Tenant Involvement Officer, said: “The effort that the children made to tidy up their area was wonderful. They were so enthusiastic and worked very hard. They followed instructions and worked together as a group really well. It was amazing to see the difference once they had finished.

WDH worked with schools including South Kirkby Academy, North Featherstone Junior and Infant School, Normanton Common School, Normanton All Saints School, Girnhill School and Streethouse School.
