Don’t let condensation be a pain this winter

Published 6 November 2017

At this time of year we receive calls from tenants about what they think is ‘damp’ in their homes – black mould spores or moisture which appears on walls and windows.

Most of the time this is actually condensation, caused by cold air meeting warm air in your home.

To remove condensation or mould from your walls and windows, you should wash them with warm , soapy water and leave the area to dry out naturally.

There are simple choices you can make to reduce condensation in your home:

  • Try to keep the inside temperature reasonably constant for as much time as possible
  • Avoid drying clothes indoors. If you have no choice, place the clothes rack beside an open window in a room with the door shut.
  • Do not dry clothes over radiators.
  • Make sure your tumble dryer is properly vented and the condensate is emptied regularly.
  • Keep furniture away from external walls.
  • Do not turn off any extraction fans.

It is important that you try all of the above before contacting OneCALL, as call-outs related to damp which are found to be condensation could be recharged to you.

We also have videos about damp and condensation on the repairs area of the website with further tips on how to prevent or deal with damp and condensation in your home. Visit www.wdh.co.uk and log on to your online account and visit the repairs section to view these.
