WDH apprentices help students build new skills

Published 11 March 2015

Two WDH apprentices visited a class of construction students in Hemsworth to promote the start of WDH’s 2015 apprenticeship scheme.

Cody Haley, an apprentice bricklayer and Alfie Coney, an apprentice plasterer, discussed their WDH apprenticeships with students from Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy, who are studying for a Level 2 construction qualification, during a visit last Tuesday (4 March). They also talked about their experiences in the scheme so far and gave advice about the application process and how to make themselves stand out as potential candidates.

Cody and Alfie answered a variety of questions about the scheme and gave information about the range of trades now recruiting.

Steve Warrillow, a Construction Tutor at the Academy, said “They were extremely helpful and answered the students’ questions with enthusiasm. It’s great that there are schemes in place to encourage local people to work in their local area, especially for such a large employer with a successful scheme in place.”

Faye Pass, WDH’s Apprentice Review Officer, said “It’s really encouraging that apprentices like Cody and Alfie are enthusiastic about the scheme. That they now have the confidence to come and discuss their work with young people thinking about a career in construction shows just how much they are benefitting from working as a WDH apprentice.”

Next week the class at Hemsworth Arts and Community Academy will visit Hawthorne Court, one of WDH’s new build sites in Crofton, to see the kind of work apprentices do and how a WDH apprenticeship will prepare them for a career in construction. For more information about becoming a WDH apprentice visit www.wdh.co.uk/apprenticeships or come to WDH’s open evening: 5.30 – 7.30pm 11 March at Merefield House, Whistler Drive, Castleford, WF10 5HX

Closing date for applications is 19 March.
