Northern Ballet Workshop at Castleford Academy

Students on the When Dance Happens initiative were treated to a ballet masterclass ahead of their eagerly anticipated trip to see the production of ‘Victoria’ at the Northern Ballet Company in Leeds.

Freelance dance artist, Henry Rhodes, who has previously performed with Northern Ballet, showcased dance moves that will be performed in ‘Victoria’ which the students were able to learn.

The groups then had to choreograph their own dance in front of an audience including WDH Social Inclusion Manager, Claire Wilkinson and Sarah Mumford, Cultural Education Director for IVE.

The When Dance Happens project is match funded by WDH and IVE (the Arts Council Bridge Organisation for Yorkshire & Humber) offering young people opportunities to learn modern dance techniques, take part in taster sessions, workshops, competitions and performances. They will also be given the opportunity to attend trips to dance productions, out of school clubs, and curriculum dance sessions as well as delivering a festival of dance and working towards bronze, silver and gold arts awards.

Claire Wilkinson said: “It’s great to see all the young people getting involved in a variety of dance and they all seem to be enjoying themselves. This workshop has given them a taste of some of the showpieces being performed at the Northern Ballet, which they will recognise when they see the show, having professional guest dance tutors will further encourage their confidence and it’s been a pleasure to see how they are learning and progressing so far through the programme.”
