New business makes Paul a model tenant

A first time business owner has opened a model accessory shop in one of WDH’s commercial units in Flanshaw.

Paul Routley has taken his first steps on the entrepreneurial ladder by opening Detritus Models and Terrain in the parade of shops on Thirlmere Road.

He took the decision to set-up on his own when owner of Wakefield Models and Crafts, where Paul was employed , retired and closed the business.

“I’ve got a huge amount of experience of working in the games industry so I thought I would give it a go. I live locally and saw the ‘to let’ sign above the shop so contacted WDH straight away and they were great, and I’ve got a customer base already from my previous employment which is a good start.”

The shop sells a range of models, terrains and air fix kits aimed at beginners through to keen enthusiasts, and the layout of the shop means Paul can hand build products on site.

“The terrains are made from recycled cardboard and because this unit has a store room in the back I can make items to order which is really useful,” he said.

“The other reason I chose this unit is because it actually looks like a professional shop rather just a room, and as a first time business owner it was so helpful having the expertise of both WDH and the Wakefield Enterprise Partnership.”

Joanne Bamford, Commercial Property Surveyor at WDH said: “We were really impressed with Paul’s business plan and we’re delighted that he chose a WDH property to start what will hopefully prove a very popular and successful business.”
