Inspiring the future at Simpson Lane Academy

Published 4 July 2019

Volunteers from across WDH joined forces to dish out career support and guidance to young people as part of Aspirations Week.

Children at Simpsons Lane Academy were able to quiz five WDH employees and guess their profession in their assembly and, over three afternoons, volunteers from our Construction and Wellbeing teams shared their work experiences and described their day to day work life with children from years five and six. Children were also able to meet WDH apprentices and find out more about the different routes into training and work.

Claire Wilkinson, WDH’s Social Inclusion Manager, said: “It was great for the young people to get an insight into the day to day working life of some of our volunteers. They were very eager to learn and were asking questions throughout. It is important for them to grasp a sound understanding of the real world and working towards their career goals. All of our volunteers did a great job of keeping the young people engaged.”

Laura Fairfield, Deputy Headteacher for Simpsons Lane School said: “We have had an absolutely fantastic Aspirations Week. The children have been so eager to ask questions and learn about the different job roles. It has been great to have volunteers from such a wide range of sectors from WDH. There has been a real buzz around the school and I have no doubt that it has opened the children's eyes to their future possibilities. A big thank you to everyone involved.”
