First success is the icing on the cake for Community Learning Programme

The WDH Community Learning Programme 2014 is underway after the first session took place in South Kirkby.

Six tenants attended a Cake Decorating class at the South Kirkby Community Association, the first of eight sessions to be held there over the coming weeks, where they made flowers out of sugar paste.

Other courses held throughout the Wakefield district this summer will include bike maintenance, sewing, and a customer service course – which will see participants awarded with a City and Guilds Level 1 Award.

Betty Paxman, who attended the course, said: “I thought it was brilliant. It’s something I’ve always wanted to have a go at because I don’t really care for baking, but I’m quite creative and I loved having a go at the decorating. It was really very good and the teaching was excellent.”

Gerard Maguire, Corporate Involvement Manager, said: “I’m delighted to see the high number of tenants taking the opportunity to develop their skills with our free courses, and there’s still time for people to sign up if they want to learn something new and meet new people.”
