Don't burn your excess waste

Published 14 April 2020

We have recently seen a few incidents across the district involving garden fires. Due to the coronavirus outbreak Wakefield Council have taken the decision to suspend the collection of garden waste in order to maintain normal household and recycling waste collections.

We are aware this will lead to an increase in garden waste that you are unable to dispose of.

However, we would ask that you do not burn any waste. This can be a nuisance for your neighbours due to the smoke and fumes it produces and fires can also quickly burn out of control putting you and your family in danger.

You can bag up any excess garden or household waste until it can be disposed of at a Household Waste Recycling Centre when these reopen or put into your garden bin once your normal garden waste collections start again.

Please do not put garden waste in your household waste or recycling bin. Or you can start a compost heap to help get rid of your garden waste. Click here for useful tips on starting a compost heap and how to get the most out of it.
