Smawthorne Welfare Action Team won the Community Group Category in WDH’s 2017 Love Where You Live Awards having beat previous champions Havercroft Parents Forum after a fierce battle for digital votes.
Jackie Wilson and seven other volunteers are part of the Smawthorne Welfare Action Team in Castleford. This group works hard to make Smawthorne Park, Castleford a better place for the local community. They organise an annual gala for local families to attend and join forces with youth groups to undertake planting projects and litter picks in the park. They hope to create a sensory garden for people to enjoy and design a new picnic and play area to help improve the park for future generations to enjoy.
Zoe Gaitley, a member of the group, said: “Winning this award means everything to us, it’s amazing! We’re only a small group and we do so much so this recognition means a lot to us. The park is used by such a mix of people, green space is really important to our community.”
Jackie Wilson added: “We haven’t decided exactly how we want to spend the prize money yet but we have lots of things coming up. We have our annual gala, we want to develop a memorial garden and we have plans for a dementia friendly sensory garden. We’re just so proud to have won!”
