Celebrating Wakefield’s Finest

Tenants, residents and community groups were among the winners at WDH’s annual Love Where You Live Awards grand final.

The event, held at Wakefield’s Cedar Court Hotel and sponsored by Sodexo, celebrated local community heroes who make the Wakefield district a better place to live.

More than 13,000 votes were cast for this year’s outstanding contestants who have contributed to their communities in remarkable ways. Winners ranged from volunteers who use their own time to support vulnerable families in need to great neighbours who brighten up their neighbourhoods.

Angela Thomas, founder of Bag Fairies who took home the Digital in the Community Award said: “We are so overwhelmed to have won. We work hard to make sure no one has to go without and this prize money will help us do even more.”

WDH’s Chief Executive Andy Wallhead, said: “Our Love Where You Live Awards have been a bigger and better success than ever before, with a record-breaking number of votes cast for people and groups who make Wakefield a wonderful place for everyone.

“It is important that we celebrate the hard work and dedication that these people put into making their neighbourhoods friendlier, safer and even more enjoyable places to be, and we hope that the prize money they receive will help them to continue the great work that they do.”

This year’s winners were:

  • Community Group: Tiny Hands Baby Bank
  • Working with Older People: Kettlethorpe Friendship Group
  • Digital in the Community: Bag Fairies
  • Community Champion: Maureen Rishworth
  • Arts and Culture: El Dance Studios
  • Young Achiever:  Nytias Spence
