Best Garden Winner 2017: Charles Malcolm

Published 10 October 2017

Mr Charles Malcolm won the Best Garden award in WDH’s 2017 Love Where You Live Awards.

Mr Malcolm has brought an oasis of colour on to a main road in the centre of Ossett in Wakefield. His garden is regarded by locals as ‘The Sunshine Garden’ and people often stop to look and take photos of all his lovely flowers and plants. He works hard all year round to keep his garden maintained and looking beautiful.

He said: “I feel very honoured to have won this award. To be in the top three was an honour so I was really over the moon to have won. I spend a lot of time in the garden making sure it looks its best and I know it brings a lot of pleasure to people. It was a really lovely evening with lots of deserving winners.”

Gas Safety Week: Fighting for a Gas Safe nation18 September 2017

Published 18 September 2017
We are proud to be supporting Gas Safety Week 2017, taking place 18th – 24th September.  Gas Safety Week is an annual safety week to raise awareness of gas safety and the importance of taking care of your gas appliances. It is co-ordinated by Gas Safe Register, the official list of gas engineers who are legally allowed to work on gas.   Badly fitted and poorly serviced gas appliances can cause gas leaks, fires, explosions and carbon monoxide poisoning. Every year thousands of people across the UK are diagnosed with carbon monoxide poisoning. It is a highly poisonous gas. You can’t see it, taste it or smell it, but it can kill quickly with no warning.  By taking care of your gas appliances properly you are taking care of your home and your loved ones. Follow these few simple checks to keep you and your family safe. Check any gas appliances you own every year. Gas appliances should be safety checked once a year and serviced regularly by a Gas Safe registered engineer. Set a reminder so you don’t forget at www.staygassafe.co.uk. Check for warning signs your appliances aren’t working correctly e.g. lazy yellow or orange flames instead of crisp blue ones, black marks on or around the appliance and too much condensation in the room. Know the six signs of carbon monoxide poisoning – headaches, dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, collapse and loss of consciousness. Have an audible carbon monoxide alarm. This will alert you if there is carbon monoxide in your home. For gas safety advice or to find and check an engineer visit the Gas Safe Register website at www.gassaferegister.co.uk. Alternatively call the free helpline on 0800 408 5500.

Cash Wise support service goes social

Published 19 October 2015

A Big Lottery funded project that provides intensive one to one support sessions and interactive workshops to help people make the most out of their money has taken to social media by launching a dedicated Facebook page.

Cash Wise, which is managed by WDH, can be accessed by social housing tenants of any age who need help and support to get their finances in order.

To find out more about the page and for the chance to win an iPad visit: facebook.com/getcashwise

Pete Beaumont, WDH’s Financial Inclusion Manager, said: “Having a profile on Facebook is the next logical step in our efforts to support as many people as we can across the district. By liking our page you’ll get regular meal ideas, budgeting tips, job advice, as well the chance to hear from people who’ve been to our workshops. It is also a useful tool to form links with partner organisations who can also provide a service to our customers.”
