WDH is helping tenants to see loved ones this Christmas23 November 2017

Published 23 November 2017
WDH is working with tenants who are facing Christmas alone this year to reach out to their loved ones with the power of the internet. Our team of Digital Angels will be visiting tenants across the district to help them to wish family and friends a Merry Christmas using video link.  Mick Walsh, Director of Housing, said: “Isolation and loneliness can be an issue for some people, especially at Christmas. We’re going to try to help our tenants who might be alone at Christmas this year to connect with their loved ones . A lot of people have mobile phones or tablets but don’t realise they can use them to video call. Our Digital Angels work with tenants across the district throughout the year to help to get them online and make the most of technology they have access to. We hope that, by offering this help, we can help reduce loneliness amongt some of the most vulnerable in our community and bring a little extra Christmas cheer this year.” According to figures from Age UK, 200,000 older people across the UK have not had a conversation with friends or family for a month. We hope to tackle that this Christmas.

Children’s safety is a site better

Published 2 February 2015

Creative youngsters at Shay Lane Primary School were given prizes after producing building site safety posters.

Children at the school in Crofton, which is close to WDH’s live development just off nearby Hawthorn Court, were visited by Site Manager Dave Hobbs and Tenant Involvement Officer Chris Croxall just before Christmas for an important talk on being responsible and safe when near the site.

They were set a challenge to create a safety poster to highlight the dangers of machinery, the importance of Personal Protective Equipment and the ways that accidents can be avoided.

Earlier this week Dave and members of WDH’s Homebuilder team returned to the school to judge the posters and face the difficult task of choosing a winner from each year group.

Dave said: “From Year 2 right through to Year 6 the children showed they had listened very closely to the important safety messages of our visit last year and had clearly put a lot of thought, time and effort into the posters. Choosing the winners was exceptionally difficult and even though we were able to pick out five for prizes, we were so impressed with all the work that we’re going to use the rest of the posters to decorate the hoarding around the site.”

The winners, who each received a £10 Argos voucher, were Lucinda Doherty (y2), Amber Crossland (y3), Tibor Pinkava (y4), Kaitlyn Amos (y5) and Lucy Gallivan (y6).

The site at Hawthorn Court will consist of 32-timber framed properties and is due to be completed later this year.

Apprentice swaps job to promote vocational education

Published 11 February 2014

Two WDH employees have taken part in a job swap as part of the Brathay Apprentice Challenge - a national competition to find the Apprentice Team of the Year.

To win the competition, teams of nine apprentices must promote vocational education and raise the profile of Apprenticeships.

Brandon Kane, an Apprentice Joiner, is one of nine apprentices that form WDH’s apprentice team. He recently traded roles with Tracy Tallant, WDH’s Service Director - Human Resources.

As part of the job swap, Brandon attended HR and management meetings alongside Tracy, learning how the business works and how Tracy’s team support employees in their roles. Tracy then donned a hard hat and personal protective equipment to carry out joinery work alongside Brandon at Hatfeild Court, one of the latest WDH Independent Living Schemes to undergoing major improvement works.

Tracy said: “The day has been fantastic, and we’ve both learnt a lot. Brandon is an excellent apprentice and has shown first-hand just how highly skilled our trade apprentices are. Apprenticeships aren’t just a great way to learn valuable skills, they’re an opportunity to earn while you learn, and we’re delighted to have them.”

Speaking about his apprenticeship at WDH, Brandon said: "My apprenticeship is great. I have excellent prospects, good holidays, and get to work with fantastic people."
