£25,000 awarded to Wakefield’s community heroes

Published 27 June 2022

Over the last 11 years, Yorkshire’s largest social housing provider, WDH has given £25,000 to over 90 inspirational community groups and individuals through the Love Where You Live awards.

The awards recognise young achievers and community heroes in the Wakefield district who make a positive difference to their communities.

WDH is now inviting the public to nominate even more community heroes for the hard work they put in to make the Wakefield district a better place to live.

This year’s contest will feature eight categories, with each of the shortlisted finalists in with the chance of winning a cash prize of £200, £100 or £50 thanks to sponsors Tivoli.

Last year, the awards were held at Pontefract Racecourse and a record breaking 20,372 votes were cast for last year’s outstanding contestants who contributed to their local communities in remarkable ways. The winners ranged from volunteers who used their own time to clean up their neighbourhoods to young achievers who go the extra mile to help others as well as people who want to bring their communities together through a variety of groups and events.

Seven-year-old Alba Stogden, a little girl on a mission to make the world a cleaner, safer and happier place won the coveted Young Achiever award. Alba has walked over 240 miles, litter picking and has helped to raise thousands of pounds for mental health charities.

Alba said: “I didn’t think I’d actually win. I feel very proud of myself. Thank you to everyone who voted for me.”

The Addy in Knottingley also took first place for the second year running in the working with older and younger people categories, which is a testament to the amazing work they have continued to do in their community over the last 12 months of the pandemic.

WDH Chief Executive, Andy Wallhead, added: “Our Love Where You Live Awards have been a bigger and better success than ever before, with a record-breaking number of votes cast for people and groups who make Wakefield a wonderful place for everyone. After a difficult two years, if ever there was a time to celebrate the achievements of people in our neighbourhoods, this is it. You can nominate yourself or anyone you think deserves recognition for their efforts.”

Nominations open on Monday, 27 June 2022 and close on Friday, 29 July  2022.
