Plans to improve Normanton estate revealed

Normanton proposed play area

Plans to develop the Smirthwaite Estate in Normanton were shown to local residents at a consultation event held at the Normanton Methodist Church.

The proposals have been put forward by WDH as part of a large scale environmental improvement programme for the area. The work includes the provision of new fencing, improved parking areas, dedicated communal bin stores, enclosed patio areas for most of the ground-floor maisonettes and landscaping to the communal grassed areas. The work is being carried out in partnership with Groundwork Wakefield.

The first phase is now in progress at Hesletine Close with phase two scheduled to begin on the estate in summer/autumn and completed within approximately 12 months.

Joanne Smith, WDH Area Manager said:

“The feedback on our plans for the estate have been really positive. Over 40 residents have had their say on the proposals, and there’s elements we’ll be tweaking based on the suggestions that have been made.”

Local resident Carole Jarvis, 68, said:

“The new design for the estate is fabulous, and if I didn’t live here now I’d definitely want to move here. At the moment you can walk in front of people’s doors on the ground floor, but the proposals include fenced patio areas, which means they won’t be able to in the future. It’s great.”

Tenants and residents can continue to offer their views on the development by contacting Claire Secker, Tenant Involvement Officer on 01977 788384 or email csecker@wdh.co.uk
