We are looking for someone to work within our community based teams to provide and monitor housing related support services to tenants within Independent Living Schemes, and other customers across the Wakefield District, who may have various support needs, with the main objective being to promote and maintain the individual’s independence in their own home.

The successful applicant will have:

  • experience of working with older and vulnerable people, an understanding of their needs and knowledge of the services available to them;
  • excellent customer care skills;
  • 5 qualifications at Level 1 of the Qualifications and Credit Framework such as GCSE’s grades D-G or Certificate or Diploma at Level 1 or equivalent; and
  • a full UK driving licence and access to a vehicle at all times.

The position includes bank holiday working, participation in an out of hours standby rota and a DBS check will be required for the successful candidate.

A day in the life of a Community Support Worker (CSW)

As a CSW days are spent at the Independent Living Scheme ensuring that the residents are all okay by completing wellbeing visits either face to face or using the phone or Care Link intercom system and record the results of these. CSW’s are the main point of contact for tenants and do what they can to ensure they are okay, this can be anything from assisting them with their bills to calling for an ambulance. Many tenants just need a friendly chat. One of the many good things about our Independent Living Schemes is that people don’t feel isolated and have someone to talk to if they want.

Health and Safety is also a big part of the role and CSWs check that everything is in order at the scheme by completing regular health and safety checks, fire drills and order anything that the cleaners may need to help keep the scheme clean and tidy through our Independent Living Admin Team.

As part of the role as a CSW, regular Management Support Meetings are completed with the cleaners at the scheme, this is a chance to sit down and discuss their performance and to provide any support they may need.

Wellbeing ‘home visits’ to customers who live outside of our independent living schemes are also carried out. This service provides support for families if they need to go away, ensuring their loved one receives a regular visit. This service helps to reduce social isolation in those living alone. I work with tenants aged anything from 19 years old all the way up to 90!

New tenants are also assessed who have applied to live at a scheme to ensure they are suitable and that it meets their needs. If they are CSWs will arrange for them to visit and see the scheme before progressing their application. The refurbishment in this scheme was completed in 2015 and it feels so warm and welcoming.
